Your guide to chemical hair straightening

»Posted by in Health and Fitness

If you’re fed up of trying to tame your wavy locks into sleek, straight tresses, you’re definitely not alone. Reaching for your hair straighteners every day can get tiresome, so if you want something a bit more permanent then what are your options?

Relaxers
The earliest chemical permanent hair straightening was the hair relaxer, and it’s still popular today. The basic process involves applying alkaline chemicals to your hair which break down the bonds within the hair that give it its curls. After the bonds have been broken, the hair is coated in a neutralising solution that then sets the hair straight.

With this and any chemical process, you do need to be aware of the risk of damage to your hair. While it’s true that even the best ceramic hair straightener is going to inflict some damage, the chances are far greater with chemical processing. There are a number of different relaxer formulations available in varying strengths, so always make sure the gentlest one for your hair type is used. Also be aware that while a relaxer will get rid of your curls, it won’t necessarily give you absolutely poker straight locks.

Japanese permanent hair straightening
One of the newest permanent hair straightening methods is Japanese straightening or ‘thermal reconditioning’. These often promise to be gentler on your hair, while leaving it super straight. It’s generally the same chemical process as a relaxer that’s used to get rid of the kinks and curls, though the alkaline formulations are on the gentler side. These Japanese systems also include another key step – your hair is smoothed poker straight with special hair irons before the neutraliser is applied.

There are various glowing reviews of Japanese straightening to be found but, as always when it comes to chemical processing, you do risk damage to your hair, especially if the process isn’t carried out by someone who’s properly trained to do so. It’s also a very time consuming process, it’s not cheap and not generally recommended for Afro hair that has a more delicate structure. That said, when done well it can give fantastic low-maintenance results until your wavy re-growth starts to show.

Brazilian straightening
Another more recent treatment on offer is Brazilian straightening, also known as keratin treatment. It gives long lasting, though not permanent, results and claims to be kinder to hair than other straightening processes. A formula containing keratin is applied to the hair which is then straightened using irons. It’s claimed that this process locks the keratin into the hair, improving its condition and leaving it much straighter.

One thing to be very wary of with this process is the levels of formaldehyde often found within the keratin formula. They sometimes contain many times more than the recommended safe levels, and inhalation of formaldehyde carries serious health risks. It’s not always made clear whether these formulas actually contain formaldehyde at all, so be extremely careful before giving Brazilian treatment a go – make sure you know exactly what’s in the formula on offer.

What is a Canola Oil Substitute?

»Posted by in Health and Fitness

A canola oil substitute can be either one of the vegetable oils currently sold in the market today. In order to find a good canola oil substitute, choosing between the other oils that closely resembles the nutritional profile of canola may be the best option. Canola oil is best known for its low fat content and high heat tolerance. It is essential to find a similar vegetable oil that comes close to those characteristics. Popular cooking oils can be used when canola oil has run out of stock or becomes temporarily unavailable in the market. Here are some of the well-known canola oil substitutes:

Olive Oil
One substitute to canola oil is olive oil. Olive oil is said to be almost similar to the characteristics of canola oil. Olive oil and canola oil are commonly used as salad dressings. Both oils have low saturated fat and high omega 3 fatty acid. When it comes to which one has the most nutritional value, canola oil is healthier than olive oil. The price of canola oil is also cheaper compared to olive oil. Since olive oil is more expensive than canola oil, it may be a waste to keep on using olive oil for everyday cooking and food preparation. While cooking the food, the oil is combined with other spices and ingredients. The taste of oil does not matter so much in cooking unlike preparing a salad.
If olive oil is not intended for normal cooking, it is a good alternative to canola oil. Olive oil is also perfect for health-conscious people because of its organic origin.

Palm Oil
Palm oil is another good substitute for canola oil when it comes to everyday cooking. Like canola oil, palm oil is also inexpensive and using it daily will not be a waste of money. Palm oil is also applicable to use for any type of dish. One of the best features of palm oil is its high resistance to oxidation. This characteristic allows palm oil to have a longer shelf life than most cooking oils. However, one thing to consider before buying this type of oil is its high saturated fat content.

Peanut Oil
Another possible substitute to canola oil is peanut oil. Peanut oil has a highly resistant to heat which is similar to canola oil. Peanut oil is also good for frying but may bring out a strong flavour that might clash when combined with other dishes. Canola oil can blend well with any other food ingredient during cooking.

Coconut Oil
Coconut oil comes from the meat of the coconut and contains anti-bacterial properties that improve the condition of human hair and skin. Coconut oil is also known to benefit the cardio-vascular system and prevents the risk of diabetes, kidney diseases, obesity and other health problems. The cost of coconut oil is higher than canola oil.

Corn Oil
Corn oil is similar to canola oil in terms of good fat content and vitamin E. However, corn oil contains high saturated fat which makes it less healthy than canola oil in general.

A person may be inclined to buy canola oil as the first choice for cooking because of its health benefits. If canola oil is not available, substitutes can easily be found depending on the needs of the consumers. The prices and characteristics may vary but a canola oil substitute should also be convenient for cooking and other food applications.

Anabolic Diet – A Bodybuilding Essential

»Posted by in Health and Fitness

In America, our nutrition is something we have a very hard time controlling. We are constantly on the go and,  unfortunately, the foods we are using to feed our bodies are being sacrificed for the sake of expediency. It is not just the “average Joes” who fall victim to the convenience of fast and unhealthy foods. Most bodybuilders fail to reach their full potential because they do not commit to their nutrition.

Bodybuilding champion, Jay Cutler, has well said that if an aspiring bodybuilder has not learned how to fuel the body for success, they have no business stepping foot in the gym. Essentially what Jay is saying is that weight lifting without proper nutrition is putting the cart before the horse. Weight training without an anabolic diet for building muscle fast without fat will mostly be a waste of your time if your goal is to achieve dramatic improvements to your physique.

Proper bodybuilding nutrition is also absolutely essential for reducing body fat. Far too many people have the mistaken idea that as long as they spend thirty minutes on their treadmill every day, they can eat whatever they want the rest of the day, and still get results. Even the best cardio for weight loss cannot overcome the negative effects an unhealthy diet can have in terms of the storing of body fat. On the other hand, spending thirty minutes on a treadmill can lead to a significant reduction in body fat levels when combined with a structured fat loss nutrition plan.

If you have been training hard with minimal results to show for all of your hard work at the gym, I can tell you without a doubt that you are not providing your body with the type of nutrition that is consistent with your bodybuilding goals. Get your nutrition right, train hard and the results will follow.

Sole made from Himalayan Crystal Salt

»Posted by in Health and Fitness

If you have ever wondered why we find 2/3 of our earth covered in seawater and 2/3 of our body made from saline water it is fairly easy to understand.  As with seeds that contain the life of future plants and trees, the minerals that are found in our earth take on a whole new life when they are mixed in with water.  They become alive and activated, which is how all life on earth came to be.

When salt and it’s associated minerals get combined with water magic happens to create a new dimension where the vibrations of each and every minerals gets emitted with the medium of water to facilitate it.  These vibrations were the catalyst to life.  Positive and negative ions are the key to this jump from base minerals to life!  When we mix water with Himalayan crystal salt we get sole derived from the root word for sun in the German language.  This is because the life force of the sun is contained within this mixture.

To make your own sole you can add in a few inches of water to an inch of Himalayan crystal salts stones.  Do this in a glass jar and let it sit over night.  Over that time the water will absorb the salt to the point of saturation if you added in sufficient salts to water.  When you next check it confirm that there are crystals at the bottom of the glass.  If there are you know that you have succeeded.  If not add in more salts until you see that saturation has occurred.  You can keep this jar over an extended period of time and simply add in more salts and water as needed.

Every morning you want to take in some of the sole mixture for the vibration benefit of the 82 minerals in the mixture.  Put a teaspoon of sole into a cup of water and drink before you have anything else in the morning.  This will give your body the pattern for all the minerals to use all day long for the next 24 hours.  This powerful transfer of information is like food for the cells and the body.

Choosing the right coconut water like Vita Coco and O.N.E.

»Posted by in Health and Fitness

Coconut water is gaining a lot of attention recently both on the internet and in the mainstream media. This is partly because famous people such as Madonna have started espousing the benefits of drinking coconut water as a sports and a health drink. Of course people in the Caribbean, the South Pacific and Southern Africa and Asia have known for centuries about the benefits of coconut water. This post will look at the three most popular brands of coconut water in order to help you choose the one that suits your tastes.

The nearly universal opinion is that the best tasting coconut water is that taken straight from the husk of a young coconut. Unfortunately this option is not available to people not living in the tropics. The coconut can only live in places without frost.

The three best selling brands are Zico, Vita Coco and O.N.E. They sell coconut water in Tetra Paks for about $1.20 each. It is competitively priced compared to Gatorade and other sports drink. Coconut water contains more electrolytes such as potassium, chlorine and magnesium than sports drinks and is much lower in sugar. Moreover, coconut water is fat free and low in carbohydrates.

All the brands under consideration take their coconuts from South America, mostly Brazil. O.N.E is organic coconut water and Zico is kosher certified.

Zico is the market leader in coconut water sales. It has a smooth consistency and a good balance between the tang and sweetness of coconut water. O.N.E (One Natural Experience) is also generally regarded as tasting like fresh coconut water but some people complain that it is too watery.

Vita Coco is generally placed third in terms of taste. While some people consider it to have the strongest coconut taste, many others find it lacking in body.

It is a very subjective thing to discuss taste. For those who grew up in the tropics their memories of how coconut water should taste clearly influences their preferences as an adult.

Since coconut water is inexpensive the best way to choose the best coconut water for you is to give all three brands a try.
