How to plan your lighting with outdoor string lights

»Posted by in Home and Garden

Do you plan to add outdoor lighting to your porch, patio, or even your yard to make your home and yard more welcoming for your guests when you arrive home after dark? If so, you’re probably considering using outdoor string lights since they are so versatile, efficient to operate, and inexpensive to purchase.

But one of the most important things you should do before you buy your lights (of any kind) is decide what your lighting plan is going to be for the area you’re adding the lights to. Your only limitation to what you can do with outdoor string lighting is your imagination, so be sure to sit down and decide what you want to do with the area you’re adding lights to before buying anything. Here are a few tips to help you decide how to decorate your area with lights.

  1. If you’re going to be adding lighting to your deck, patio, or porch, decide if you’re going to illuminate one specific area of it, or are you going to illuminate the entire area. The same principle applies to your yard. Stand outside your home at night and decide where you want to add lights for the best effect.
  2. To get different design ideas, spend a few minutes looking on the internet just surfing home and garden websites. Many of them have lighting ideas that would work for your home. Also, if you have a doctors appointment or some other meeting where you know you’ll have to wait a few mins in a waiting room, look around at the magazines for lighting ideas. You’ll be surprised at how many home improvement and gardening magazines will have articles on adding lights to your home that you can glance at while waiting.
  3. Now that you know where you want to add lighting, decide where you specifically will want to add your lights. They will need to be attached to something to keep them in place, so make sure you plan on where you’re going to install them as you plan your lighting design. For example, you can plan to just lace a few strands of lights along your porches railings to keep it simple or you can hang your string lights from the edge of your roof line with hooks.
  4. Make sure that you measure the area that you want to add the lights to. You’d be surprised at how many people will go to the store and buy the lights they think they need only to realize when they get home that they didn’t buy enough lights to cover the area they want. Two minutes of preparation can make sure this doesn’t happen to you.
  5. This one will also sound simple, but plan ahead on how your lights are going to be powered. Do you have plenty of access to outdoor outlets in the area your adding lighting to? If not, you need to either install a few or choose to use a different lighting option, such outdoor patio solar lights.
  6. If you plan on buying quite a few of specific type of string lights for a particular design you want, make sure you buy a few extras just in case you have a few bulbs break or the light strand stops working a few years down the road. This way, if the manufacturer stops making that particular brand of lights or bulbs, you’re not left with a dark hole in your lighting system because you can’t replace the bulbs.

As you can see from this simple checklist, if you just do a little bit of planning ahead of time before buying your lights, you’ll be sure to get the kinds that you need. Just remember to be creative and plan ahead.

5 Tips To Consider Before Buying Tile Garage Floor Covering

»Posted by in Home and Garden

There are a number of benefits to covering your garage floor with tiles. Tile garage floor covering can be used to cover up those ugly oil stains on your garage floor and protect the floor from liquids that might penetrate it. You can use it to customize the look and feel of your garage, by selecting from a wide variety of colors and designs. Tiles may even open the door to converting your garage to an entertainment center or a man cave later on. However, before you rush out to buy some tile garage floor covering or arrange to have someone install it, you need to take a number of things into consideration. This article will highlight some of the key considerations that you should take into account.

First off, you need to think about whether you can afford to install tile garage floor covering. This is the most expensive form of garage floor covering. If you aren’t very handy, you may need to hire someone to install it for you, and that would cost even more. Before you decide to buy tile garage floor covering, you need to get an idea of how much you’ll need, and how much it will cost. It is usually priced by the square foot. If you need to have someone install it, then you’ll need to get an estimate from a professional in order to insure that you’ll be able to afford it.

You need to consider what you are using your garage for. If you are using your garage for working on your cars, carpentry work, and other types of “dirty” work, and you have no intention of ever converting it into an entertainment center or anything else, then you might be better off by using vinyl mats for floor covering, or just painting the floor. These options are far less expensive than using tiles.

If you are bent on tile garage floor covering, you need to think about how long you intend to live at your current address. You have to consider this because if the tiles that you end up buying are of the adhesive, peel and stick variety, you won’t be able to pull them up and take them with you when you move out. If you’re not sure about how long you plan to live where you currently are, consider buying interlocking tiles that snap together by hand and are not permanently attached to the floor.

Before you buy rigid tiles, consider the fact that over time, they may need to be replaced, as they can develop cracks with age, wear, and thermal expansion. These cracks could allow liquids to penetrate the underlying floor.

You need to think about what design you would like your tiles to have, and what color you prefer. You can get tiles of just about every color. If you’re a racing fan, you may want to consider a floor that resembles a checkered flag. With the variety of colors and designs that are available, the possibilities are endless. If you’re really going for the artistic look, consider adding some frosted privacy window film to your windows, that will not only provide some privacy while you work, but can also add some art to your windows. These films are made with numerous designs that will help make your garage one of a kind.

These are just a few of the things that you should consider before racing out to buy some tile garage floor covering. By considering some of these items, you may determine that you’ll be better off with a less expensive option.

With all those considerations, how do you jumpstart the selection process to find the perfect wine fridge for you?

The first factor that a buyer should always take into account is the cooling performance of the wine refrigerator.  You probably know this by now that the wine refrigerator has a different approach when it comes to cooling performance and efficiency.  Choose a wine refrigerator that has a built-in dual refrigeration system.  Dual refrigeration system is clearly associated with dual-zone wine storage, which means that the refrigerator has two separate compartments and digital thermostats – one for the white wine collection and another for red wine collection.  That way, you can ideally create the perfect storage atmosphere for your wine collection, no matter what type they fall into.

Design options are very crucial too, especially for those home owners who want nothing but to have an aesthetically pleasing appliance.  High-end brands like GE Monogram and Sub-Zero Preservation have design options to choose from; for instance, the Sub Zero parts and exterior designs can truly transform the fridge into a work of beauty.

Another important consideration is the size and the storage capacity of the fridge.  Your storage needs reflect the size of the wine refrigerator you should buy.  For instance, if you are an inveterate wine enthusiast with a large-scale wine refrigerator, then by all means buy a bigger wine fridge than usual.  Most of the wine storage units available today are compact and space-efficient, but there are also bigger models for bigger storage needs.

The simple way to make compost in your yard

»Posted by in Home and Garden

If you’re interested in learning how to make compost in your yard, you’ve probably read a few articles online or in a home and gardening magazine about how easy it can be. Learning how to make compost in your backyard is one of the simplest ways you can reduce your impact on your local environment. Not only will you reduce how much trash you throw away by recycling your kitchen scraps and yard trimmings, but you’ll also save money and reduce energy usage by not having to go to your local gardening store to buy mulch for your garden or flowerbeds.

There are two basic methods you’ll need to choose from when learning how to making compost: one in which you just make a pile of everything you’re composting in a container or spot in your yard, stir it once a week or so, and wait for it to decompose on it’s own OR you can hasten the process by using worms to make the decomposition process go faster.

If you plan on using worms to speed up the decomposition process, your going to want to build your bin a little differently than if you were to just make a basic compost pile. You’ll want to build (or buy) a shallow container about 18 inches deep and you’ll also want to drill a few holes into the bottom of it so that air can fully circulate all the way around it. You’ll also want to have it off the ground (at least a few inches) for the same reason. When picking a spot for your bin in your yard, make sure that you choose a spot that is primarily shaded during the day as you don’t want the bin to get too hot once you add your worms into it.

When adding worms to your compost, make sure you use the proper kind. The best types for composting are red worms. (Digging up a few night crawlers from your garden is not the best idea.) Red worms reproduce at a fast rate and they live well in confined spaces. You’ll need about a thousand or so worms to start, which is only a pound or so when you order them from a supplier.

Make sure you have your compost bin full of all the materials you want to compost and that it’s moist before adding the worms into it so that they have something to eat and a good place to live. (Just don’t let your bin get too dry as they perform best in a moist environment.) You’ll be surprised at how fast adding worms to your compost pile will speed up the process. Usually it takes an average of 8 to 12 weeks for your compost to be ready to use, but with the help of worms you’ll be able to use it in as little as 6 weeks.

Log Home Repair: Beginner Tips

»Posted by in Home and Garden

Before you start any log home repair project, you have to determine the basic materials and methods that will keep the structure strong and aesthetic for years to come. There are elements that you need to stay protected from, as well as factors to consider to make the most out of your hard-earned investment. You have to get more ideas from experts and other homeowners too. Here are some beginner tips to guide you.

Repairing Windows and Doors

Log home windows come in various sizes, shapes and styles. These can also include a number of other materials, such as glass, wood, metal, etc. The elements you’re battling with from the outside will determine the style of window. It’s vital you talk to a contractor first to check if your current windows still serve the function well, or if you need to replace these with a new design to keep the elements out. Some people find that their log homes have to combat new elements like fungi, snow or extreme heat, which is why windows and doors also have to be designed a certain way to keep the temperature inside stable.

About Air Leaks

Air leaks are generally caused by compromises in the structure that lets air from the external environment enter via holes, cracks and leaks in the log home. Air leaks can be treated generally by caulking and chinking the exterior part of the house entirely. Chinking and caulking involves filling the spaces using filling or special mold to keep air and moisture from entering the logs, which can lead to rot and decay. After some years, continuous entrance of air and moisture will destroy the wood, thereby letting air in. People inside will experience draft and unstable temperature due to this problem.

Repairing the Roof

Among log home repair projects, roof repair and maintenance can be one of the most expensive. You have to find the same material used to get the same look, as well as be knowledgeable in processes that will maintain its strength. Roofing also has to consider what the house has to stay protected from, like snow, heavy rain, strong wind and dust. Roof repair in major cases will require total replacement of the logs. Talk to a contractor to guide you in choosing the right logs and how these should be prepared. Other roofs are made of either paper or shingles, so also compare choices online to get the best material.

Choosing the Log

It is possible to replace totally destroyed logs using new and fresh wood of another type. However, you will need to stain it with the same color to create an aesthetic appeal. The wood house has to come in only one color. Do not paint the logs. Painting traps moisture and air inside and will eventually lead to cracks and decay after a few years. Choose the type of log according to your taste and budget. Some of the choices include cedar, oak, fir, pine, etc. Some of these are pricier because of rarity and quality.

Choosing the Professional

The best way for beginners to hire expert services is to get referrals from friends and other log homeowners. There are also online forums where you can meet a lot of owners who will be more than happy to share with you insight on DIY or do-it-yourself approaches, should the repairs needed only be minor. Find out more about the professional’s background and experience. Ask for pictures or view some of his previous projects. Also determine his areas of specialty and ask for his recommendations after he makes a full assessment of your home. Always get a second or third opinion and see how each professional approaches the situation. Compare prices and quotations as well.
